Zircon - December Birth Stone
(alternate)
Paradise Jewelry Home Page
Zircon has only been used in popular Jewelry
since the late 18th century. The name Zircon is thought to
derive from the Persian word zargun, meaning "gold-like".
This is somewhat confusing in itself as Zircon appears in
a wide array of colors. Another area of confusion is the
various other names it has been known by throughout
history including: Jargon, Hyacinth, Jacinth and Ligure.
Much of the world's Zircon supply comes from Cambodia
and Vietnam, and the more stable political situation in this
part of the world in recent years has meant that Zircon is
now a very affordable gem with some magnificent colors
to endear it to the wearer.
Traditionally, Zircon is believed to help one be more at
peace with oneself while providing the wearer with wisdom,
honor and riches. Legend also has it that the loss of luster
on a Zircon is a warning of imminent danger.
