The Hindus believed that a fine Ruby could boil water.  Rubies range from bright, pure red, to orangey red, to purplish red.  Rubies are the mineral Corundum and they come in all colors BUT, when corundum is any color but red it is called Sapphire!
In India, rubies are the king of stones and are associated with royalty, dignity, zeal, and power. In Burma, they are thought to confer invulnerability. When worn as jewelry, they are believed to ward off misfortune and illness, discover poison, and correct evils resulting from mistaken friendships.
Since Rubies are a hardness of 9 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, they are wonderful gems for Jewelry. .
