Whenever I hear “everybody knows” my radar perks right up!
Here are some things that "everybody knows", and they simply aren’t true!:
Diamonds come from coal
The largest rough diamond ever found was the Cullinan 3,106 cts (but a larger
one discovered is 10 billion, trillion, trillion carats)
Fake jewelry turns your skin black
Diamonds are the toughest gemstones
Aqua and Tanzanite are mined out.
You can tell Blue Topaz from Aqua by the color.
The way to test a diamond is to see if it will cut glass
Zircons are cheap diamond imitations
Sapphires are blue
Diamonds need to get light from behind
Opals need to be soaked or they will dry out
DeBeers makes diamonds expensive
Gemologists must have perfect color vision
All Diamonds are white
You need to watch your ring being worked on in order to prevent Diamond
switching
“Old” (antique) jewelry is valuable
Jade comes from China
The darker a gem is, the more valuable it is
The word “Points” refers to the cuts on a diamond
Zircons are “cheap” fake diamonds
