Diamonds & Gems Class
This class is about the world of Diamonds and Gems, how they are found, mined, and cut, how they are valued, the myths and lore surrounding them, as well as some of the gemology involved in identifying them.
Important subjects covered will include
preventing stone switching, getting a good appraisal, and choosing a good
jeweler.
We have a lot of fun examining the many
myths about gems and jewelry: For instance: opals are harder than
you think - they can cut glass! Diamonds are not the toughest gemstone.
Platinum isn't harder than gold (but it is *much* more durable). There are
DOZENS of other things to discover - you'll be surprised!
Since students are not expected to invest in gemological equipment, the class only gets into "soft" gemology, using a loupe and an educated eye. Loupes will be available for class use and/or purchase.
The class takes place Tuesday nights for three weeks running, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Cost is $49 and registration takes place the night of the first class.
Location: Barron Collier High School on
Airport Rd. North a block North of Pine Ridge, across from Bob Taylor Chevrolet.
